Depression

Depression is a medical condition not spoken of and discussed much by people. While physical medical conditions have visible symptoms, most mental health conditions are hidden due to lack of visible physical symptoms. Some mental health conditions are so masked under normal behaviour that even the person suffering from such conditions may sometimes be unaware. The symptoms of depression vary from mild or almost unnoticeable to major ones.

From a medical point of view, depression can be defined as a major medical condition which affects the way people feel, act, and think. The severity of depression varies from person to person depending on a multitude of factors. Depending on the severity, even the symptoms of depression vary from individual to individual. However, the incidence of depression is said to be more in women than men.

What are the causes of depression?

The causes of depression are multiple and vary on a case to case basis. If one individual’s depression is caused due to environmental factors, there is every possibility that another individual suffers from depression due to genetic factors. The other more serious causes of depression include psychological and social or psychosocial factors.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Some of the symptoms of depression exhibited by people suffering from this condition include but not limited to those mentioned below.

  • Feeling guilty for no specific reason
  • Being sad or in a depressed state of mind
  • Lack of interest in activities that the person was previously greatly interested in
  • The feeling of not being worthy
  • Thoughts of committing suicide

The above mentioned symptoms are just a few of the many depression symptoms. It is not mandatory for every person with depression to display all the symptoms. Each person will display symptoms based on the cause of depression.

How do you treat depression?

The treatment plan for people suffering from depression varies from individual to individual depending on a variety of factors. While there are self help strategies as well to cope with depression there are other scientific ways of treating depression.
