Top Five Reasons – Why parenting is more challenging today?

All parents want to be good parents and want to be successful in raising disciplined and responsible children. In today's fast-paced society, parenting is even more challenging than it was before. Let us examine the top reasons why parenting is more challenging when compared to earlier days. What are the pressures experienced by contemporary parents, unlike those faced by their parents?

  1. Time Pressure: - Due to hectic work schedules, parents find it hard to find time for themselves and for their children. When both the parents are working, finding enough time in the day to balance parenthood becomes tougher.
  2. Societal Pressure:- Every kid is expected to be a top performer in all activities like academics, arts and sports. Parents also want their kids to outperform any other known kids. Anything less than 100% is unacceptable.
  3. Demand Pressure: - Expectation clashes become worse when parents have unrealistic expectations about kids and kids have such expectations from the parents.
  4. Money Pressure:- The money pressure that comes with recurring expenses in the form of school fees and other spending is becoming a burden to most parents. Even after spending a good amount, they find their children misbehaving and lacking in values and life skills.
  5. Family set-up Pressure:- Family structures are becoming more varied with the family set-up shrinking with almost no support from the closed family group.

Apart from the above-mentioned challenges are the alarmingly increasing number of child suicides, missing children from home, drug abuse and other violation cases.

Activities that help overcome anxiety

Activities that help overcome anxiety

Anxiety is pretty common among the youth. The mounting pressures, the social scenario and even the day-to-day news make you anxious and tense. Anxiety makes it hard for you to concentrate on the things that are important. For instance, you are anxious whether or not you will be able to score well in the finals, which takes you away from the moment when you have to actually study for them. This is just one example; there are several, each one making you less focused.

How to tackle anxiety? “Now” is where the power is. All you have is this moment! There is an entire mystery associated with the future, and you really don’t want to spend time thinking about what you don’t know. Instead, start living in the moment. Enjoy every minute of the “NOW”, and you will be able to work your way through the future.

How to move away from anxiety and concentrate on the present? Here we will discuss a few simple activities that will help you be less anxious and more focused.

Art Therapy

Grab colouring books, and get your box of paints out. If you are feeling anxious, there is no better way than colouring. It not only helps you stay focused but also gets you in the creativity zone. Painting stones can be really relaxing. Grab stones of odd shapes and paint a whole new world onto them.

Let your imagination loose

It is important for you to let your imagination flow, when you are anxious. You will let on your creativity and get to play multitudes of characters in your imagination. An anxious mind generates a plot that’s unbeatable. What’s your story?

Relaxation through meditation

Meditation is one of the best ways to overcome anxiety and be more relaxed. Feel the physical sensations in your body. Focus on them, one at a time, and be more aware of it. This is a type of meditation which makes you more aware of the present, and keeps you focused. Of course, there is the breathing technique too which can help you focus better. Take deep breaths, and help your mind settle.

Collage

Did you know that collage making is actually an art that requires a lot of focus and creativity? It helps your mind come out with great ideas, and helps relax the anxiety. If you are anxious, get pictures out and set out to make a good collage.

Music therapy

If you play an instrument, the best way to lessen your anxiety is by playing the instrument. It will also help in increasing your focus. If you don’t know how to play music but you are an avid listener, get your favourite bands on the playlist, and start focusing on the music. This therapy truly works.

Doodle your way

You can always draw comic strips and doodle something that you feel or think or see. Creative minds can focus better and they have a greater chance of reducing the anxiety level.

So, next time you feel anxious, instead of focusing on the anxiety, try to follow one of these. You might be able to focus on the present better.

How to help a teenager with anxiety and depression?

How to help a teenager with anxiety and depression?

“I am going to have my moody times” ~Lucinda Williams.

This is just what every teenager in every nook and corner of the world feels. They are caught between being an adult and being a kid, which could make them rebellious and emotional. They are fighting a battle of their own. But, depression is a completely different thing! It is not normal for a teenager to go through depression, and there are subtle signs that tend to differentiate normal behaviour with depression.

How will you know whether or not, your teenager is fighting depression? Here are some signs that could help you through.

  • It is very common among teens to be rebellious, and moody. You may find them to be highly temperamental. Such teens are not depressed. Normally teens require more sleep than their adult counterparts. They are moody beings and tend to be over-emotional on most days. What is the difference then? Changes in appetite, lower concentration levels, inability to perform, lacking interest in most activities and withdrawal are all signs that your teenager is depressed. This could be accompanied by aggression, and irritation. If this persists, you may want to consult a therapist.
  • Depressed teens are not troublemakers or loners, as the general theory goes. You may observe depression in teens who appear to be normal, don’t mess things up, and yet show all the signs that lead to the doors of depression
  • Anxiety is a result of inability to cope with the social and academic pressures simultaneously, owing to depression.

The underlying issue would be depression, followed by other issues such as difficulty in learning, lack of observation etc.

How to help the teen cope with depression?

As a parent, it is important to believe that depression is completely curable. That’s the first step to start helping your teenager. Being patient while, your child undergoes anxiety and believing in them will be a good start to combat depression in your teenager. EFT and Bach Flower remedies have been known to work well in these situations. There is a range of alternative therapies too!

At this time around, the parent will need to guide the child step-by-step, urging and not forcing the teenager to take therapy. Apart from that, it is important for the parent to be a part of the treatment plan, understanding it thoroughly.

Patience is a useful quality while working with teenagers.

  • Pay close attention to what your teenager is feeling. It is very important. Their feelings and their emotions need to be put into words, and only when they trust you, will they be able to share their emotions with you
  • If your child is anxious, remember to stay calm and composed. If you panic, it will not help your child
  • If they are not making any progress, you may need to support them. It is important that they believe you are fine with who they are, for them to improve and progress
  • Keep your expectations in check. Modify them as per your child’s behaviour and progress
  • Keep allowances for delays. It is possible the child is unable to get out of bed in the morning owing to their condition. If that’s the case, make sure you have enough room for delay in your plans.

Parents can be very supportive in ensuring the child’s well-being and will need to compose themselves to get their child out of depression.

Ways to help your children develop self-esteem and confidence

Self-esteem and confidence are major traits in individuals that affect their success. While these are a lifelong process, the foundation of it needs to be established in early childhood. Building self-esteem will allow the child to deal with difficult situations that they will encounter during their lifetime. Since parents have the greatest influence on a child's belief, it is important for them to let their child know where they belong, how well they are doing and contribute towards developing confidence and self-esteem.
